Song lists

Road trip songs

A road trip playlist arranged the way a long drive actually goes: five discs, from pulling out of the driveway to the last exit before home. Each disc is a starter list you can top up to 80 minutes.

Short answer

The best road trip songs match the stage of the drive: upbeat departures (Life Is a Highway, Born to Run), cruising songs (Fast Car, Free Fallin’), sing-alongs (Don’t Stop Believin’, Africa), night songs (Midnight City, Drive) and homecomings (Closing Time). One CD holds 18 to 22 songs; five discs cover about six and a half hours.

Most road trip songs lists are one long shuffle. A real drive has a shape: the buzz of leaving, the long middle, the stretch where everyone sings, the quiet hours after dark and the last few miles. We built this road trip playlist as five discs, the same way our five-CD Road Trip set works, so you can play them in order or hand one to whoever’s in the passenger seat.

How do you make CDs for the car?

Make car CDs as audio CDs on CD-R blanks, each under 80 minutes, because audio CDs play in nearly every car stereo. A few more things we’ve learned from burning a lot of car CDs:

  • Burn an audio CD, not an MP3 disc, if you’re not sure what the car plays. Audio CDs work in nearly every car stereo; MP3 discs only work in players that say so. Our guide to CD-R, CD-RW and MP3 CDs explains the difference.
  • Use CD-R, not CD-RW. Many older car players can’t read rewritable discs.
  • Keep each disc under 80 minutes, about 18 to 22 songs. Our guide to how many songs fit on a CD has the math.
  • Choose clean or explicit up front. If kids or grandparents are riding along, ask for clean versions. This list is mostly clean.
  • Label the discs. Write the disc number and name on the case so the passenger can find Disc 3 without taking their eyes off the map. Our free CD case template prints a tracklist for each.
  • Keep them out of direct sun. A dashboard in summer is hard on any disc. Store them in their cases in the glovebox or door pocket.

For picking and ordering the songs themselves, see our guide to making a mixtape.
