How many songs fit on a CD?

The answer depends on how long your songs are and how you burn the disc. Here's the math, a table you can read at a glance, and what we do when a playlist won't fit.

Short answer

A standard CD-R holds 80 minutes of audio, which is about 18 to 22 songs of average length (3½ to 4 minutes). Short songs fit 25 or more; long ones, closer to 15. An MP3 CD holds far more (150+ songs) but plays only in MP3-capable players.

How many songs fit on a CD by song length?

An 80-minute audio CD fits 22 songs that average 3:30, 19 that average 4:00, and 15 that average 5:00. The table assumes you fill the disc to 79 minutes, leaving a little headroom, with the 2-second gap most burning software puts between tracks.

Songs that fit on one 80-minute audio CD
Average songSongs per CDSounds like
3:0026Most pop and punk songs
3:3022A typical modern pop or country single
4:0019Classic rock, R&B, most 80s and 90s hits
4:3017Ballads, indie, longer album cuts
5:0015Prog, jam bands, extended mixes
6:0013Epics: Stairway, November Rain, Bohemian Rhapsody-length

Most playlists people send us average between 3:30 and 4:00 a song, which is why the honest answer is “18 to 22.” A playlist of 90s alt-rock or 70s classics runs longer per song than a playlist of current pop.

What's the difference between an audio CD and an MP3 CD?

An audio CD holds 80 minutes of uncompressed sound and plays in every CD player; an MP3 CD holds about 700 MB of files (150+ songs) but plays only in MP3-capable players. That’s why “how many songs” has two answers.

Audio CDMP3 CD
Holds80 minutes (about 18–22 songs)About 700 MB of files (150+ songs at typical quality)
Plays inEvery CD player, car stereo and boomboxOnly players labelled MP3 or MP3-CD compatible

For a gift, burn an audio CD. You can’t know what player it will end up in, and an audio CD plays in all of them. Our guide to CD-R, CD-RW and MP3 CDs covers the formats and which blank discs to buy.

How many minutes, megabytes and tracks does a CD hold?

A standard CD-R holds 80 minutes of audio or 700 MB of computer files, and an audio CD stops at 99 tracks. The two numbers on the label measure different things.

  • 80 minutes is the audio capacity. CD audio is 44.1 kHz, 16-bit stereo, which works out to about 10 MB per minute, uncompressed.
  • 700 MB is the capacity for computer files. Audio is stored with less error correction than data, so an 80-minute audio disc actually carries about 847 MB of sound. That’s why the numbers don’t seem to add up.
  • 74-minute (650 MB) discs still turn up in old stock and some bargain packs. Check the label before you burn a long playlist.
  • 99 tracks is the most an audio CD can hold, however short the songs.

How do you check if a playlist fits on one CD?

A playlist fits on one CD if its total running time is 1 hr 19 min or less. Spotify and Apple Music show that total at the top of the playlist. If the app only shows a rough figure, paste the song list into our playlist length calculator: it looks up each song’s length, adds them up, and tells you how many discs you need.

Already know it fits? Send us the playlist and we’ll burn it to a real CD, test-play it, and post it within three business days.

What can you do when a playlist runs past 80 minutes?

A playlist that runs past 80 minutes can be cut to the best 79 minutes, shortened with radio edits, split across two discs, or spread over a five-disc set:

  1. Cut to the best 79 minutes. A mix gets better when you cut it. If a song is only there to fill time, it’s the one to drop.
  2. Swap in radio edits. Album versions with long intros or outros can run a minute or two longer than the single.
  3. Split it across two discs. Two CDs give you 160 minutes, and a natural “side A, side B” break. Our Two CD Gift Set is built for this.
  4. Go big for a drive. A five-disc set holds about six and a half hours, enough for a long road trip without repeats. See our road trip song list for how we’d sequence one.

When an order comes in over the limit, we don’t cut songs on our own. We ask which ones to trim, or suggest the two-disc set. If you’re planning a mix from scratch, our mixtape guide covers picking and ordering songs so the 80 minutes count.

Questions people ask

How many songs can you burn on a CD?

An 80-minute CD-R holds about 18 to 22 average-length songs as an audio CD, the kind that plays in any car or stereo. Short songs stretch that to 25 or more; long ones bring it down to 15. Burned as an MP3 CD instead, the same disc can hold 150 or more songs, but only players that support MP3 discs can read it.

How long is a CD?

A standard CD-R holds 80 minutes of audio. Older and some cheaper blanks hold 74 minutes. Factory-pressed albums can run up to about 79 to 80 minutes, though most are 40 to 60.

How many MB is a CD?

A standard CD-R is labelled 700 MB, which is its capacity for computer files. Audio is written with less error correction, so the same 80-minute disc carries about 847 MB of uncompressed CD audio.

How many songs are on a mixtape?

A classic 90-minute cassette mixtape held about 20 to 24 songs, 45 minutes a side. A mix CD lands in the same place: 18 to 22 songs in 80 minutes. There's no fixed rule: a mixtape is as long as the music you choose.

What's the maximum number of tracks on an audio CD?

An audio CD holds a maximum of 99 tracks. The audio CD standard numbers tracks from 1 to 99, so even a disc of very short songs stops at 99.

Can I fit more on a 90- or 99-minute CD-R?

90- and 99-minute CD-Rs exist, but they push past the CD standard and many car stereos and older players can't read the extra length reliably. For a disc that will be played in a car or given as a gift, stick to 80-minute blanks.

What if my playlist is longer than 80 minutes?

A playlist longer than 80 minutes can be cut to the strongest 75 to 79 minutes, shortened with radio edits, or split across two discs. Two CDs give you 160 minutes; five give you about six and a half hours, enough for a long drive.
